MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a darkly comedic drama that follows Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who is at odds with her family over the death of her best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales). She died in the military. Despite the persistence of her VA team counselor (Morgan Freeman), the intense love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the lightheartedness of an unexpected romance, Merit and Zoeβs cozy-but-dysfunctional friendship keeps them both isolated from the world. That is, until Meritβs estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the familyβs ancestral lake house, begins to lose his way and needs the one thing he refuses to give up: help. At its core, this is a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a broken family, and the complex ways we process grief.
