A generational story about families and the special place they live in, sharing love, loss, laughter, and life. Based on the comic book « Here » by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a strip in the comic book magazine Raw in 1989, and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. Richard’s father at one point early in the film mentions the names of several towns that he claims are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are towns along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not yet been built at the time. This is a film that is truly one of the most unique concepts we’ve seen in a while. The film relies on the viewer being able to enjoy fixating on one camera/location and telling a story about the impact of time on life and the people who move through it. Zemeckis has done this on many levels and manages to use the space well and keep the shot dynamic despite being so static. The dynamic changes in the set design make this piece fascinating and the idea of ​​changing furniture is a feature of the house itself that is impressive and serves as a metaphorical window into life. I loved watching the people and families who called the villa home live in this room, seeing their interactions, auras and personalities that cast a different light on the scene and tell their own micro-stories. The transitions were done using the outlines of the photographs, drawing attention before breaking into a new scene, the technique is fluid and rarely over the top for me. There were many aspects that were creative but never lost the anchor of realism to make this a nice, balanced piece. In terms of story and acting, an A-list of talent helped bring this film to life and achieve its goal of looking at life. Here is a film that relies heavily on being relevant, and the cast brings that relevance to life. In terms of story, it rarely strays from people living their lives, taking fragments of different periods and reflecting them on the times. The highs and lows are beautifully captured on screen, and Zemeckis’ vision helps hammer the concepts home and hit you with the emotional punch that this film promised. When the right stories hit me, it only strengthened my connection to the film, and I found my inner self pondering what the film had to teach me. The acting is there to give words to the visions, and much of the dialogue is poetic without being too Shakespearean in its delivery. Bettany was a surprise, and while not as engaging or dynamic as his Disney films, he still manages to impress me with his excellent performance of the baby boomer generation facing the rapid changes in the world. Wright’s return to the screen is abrupt, as her character is torn between fun and madness, a brilliant portrayal of the struggles that so many in her position have faced over the course of decades of change. Hanks is of course as talented as he was, incorporating elements of his other characters into every moment of his life, and doing so with the same class and vigor he almost always brings to the screen. It’s the chemistry that works, that family atmosphere that feels so natural and almost authentic with strong leads who guide the characters and never fall too much into Hollywood spectacle.
