STARS: ***** Brilliant **** Very Good *** Good ** Poor * Terrible ‘Helen Webb’ (Keira Knightley) lives with her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan), the Defense Secretary, and their two children. Everything seems idyllic until her former commanding officer Reed (Sarah Lancashire) comes back into her life and informs her that her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) has been killed along with two others, causing her to restart her previous life. as a secret spy for revenge. Reed reunites with Sam (Ben Whishaw), an assassin and his former trainer, and together they navigate a complex web of political espionage and murder. The spy thriller has fallen out of favor over the years, but it still has the potential to work in new and different formats. Black Doves came out of nowhere with a massive advertising campaign, becoming Netflix’s latest major production to hit the charts and aim to revive the genre today. The result is a truly mixed bag that holds your attention for a pleasantly concise eight episodes, but can’t quite cover up the script’s bumps. All in all, it’s a pretty standard spy story with some pretty standard twists. cloak and dagger clichés that anyone familiar with spy capers of old will recognize and even embrace with gusto. The big problem is the uneven tone. The script bounces unevenly between tongue-in-cheek action comedy and dark, gritty spy thriller, leaving too much to be grasped. However, it makes up for it with some slick flashy action sequences, Whishaw. and Knightley is a convincing pair of professional misfits, with strong support from Lancashire as the detached and frosty M-type commander. The spy thriller still has endless potential, and despite its flaws, Black Doves is a strong addition to the board, with an interesting mystery at its heart, some strong performances and action to match. ***
